Games Programming
Since the start of computers and programs, computer games stood strong as one of the most widely used programs in the world. So what is a computer game anyway? A computer game is an application created for amusement and entertainment of the user. It is focused on providing a fresh and dynamic method of relaxation at little cost. Computer games exist in many flavours and genres. Some of the more common types of games include:
- First Person – Gameplay seen as though the player is actually in the game. Some examples include Battlefield, Homefront, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor and Combat Arms.
- Action-Adventure – Typically presents a long term obstacle that must be overcome using tools gathered as reward earlier in the game. Examples include Grand Theft Auto, Transformers, Just Cause, Prince of Persia and Mafia.
- Role Play – The player assumes the role of the characters in a fictional environment. Some examples include Dragon Age, Fallout, Mass Effect, Diablo and Torchlight.
- Racing – Gameplay where player controls a vehicle or object of some sort in a racing environment. Examples include Need for Speed, Blur, Dirt, Burnout and Pro Cycling.
- Strategy – User is entertained with making strategic decisions reflecting real world scenarios i.e. building a town and army and attacking another for their resources like gold, wood and more. Examples include Starcraft, Age of Empires, Warcraft and Rome.
All of these games are developed by groups of programmers, designers and artist all specializing in their own fields.
But regardless of the field, programming skills play a vital role in the development of games.
